Clarification

It’s been brought to my attention that in my last post of Bountiful Bouquet, I totally missed a row!

I’ll redo that month’s instructions again, and hopefully it’ll be clearer for you.  Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention!

Month One – we should have a strip measuring 9.5” x 42.5”

Month Two – we should have two strips measuring 4.5” x 42.5”

Month Three – we should have our log cabin row measuring 7.5” x 42.5”

Month Four – we should have one strip measuring 4.5” x 42.5”

and one measuring 2.5” x 42.5”

Month Five – we should have one strip measuring 7.5” x 42.5”

Month Six – we should have one strip measuring 6.5” x 42.5”

Month Seven – we should have a strip measuring 6.5” x 42.5”

**please note – this is the month where the single flowers are appliqued on.  I do not know how to add this flower to my electric quilt programme yet, which is why there is no picture on this block**

Month Eight – we should have one strip measuring 8.5” x 42.5”

to have a finished quilt centre as below:

When all stitched together, your quilt top should measure 57.5” x 42.5”.

Now we need the half yard of inner border fabric we have set aside previously. I have used a plummy purple.

Cross cut into six (2) inch strips.

Join together into one long strip and cut this into four smaller strips, two measuring 42.5” and two measuring 60.5”.

Stitch a 42.5” strip to top and bottom of your quilt and press. Stitch the longer strips to either side of your quilt and press.

Quilt should now measure 45.5” x 60.5”

Some questions

I’ve had a couple of questions posted to me about both the Block of the Month and the Mystery Quilt.  Today is a messy, messy day and when I have five minutes later on (before I go to bed) I promise to answer them all personally.

Dear Jane Block C1 Trooper Green’s Badge

Football season is excellent.  I get to lock myself in the sewing room on Friday nights while he is watching his team play football.  It’s a win-win!

This is last week’s Friday night block, C1 Trooper Green’s Badge.  I machine pieced it, and it went together surprisingly easier than I imagined.

This is a great quilt for your quilting self esteem.  I highly recommend you give it a whirl.

Dear Jane … a summary to date

I have been v. v. industrious lately and have tried hard to get on top of these little suckers.  Time will tell how long it takes me to finish this quilt, though I started it in October 2010.

Part Four

As always, remember scrappy is best! Use lots of different fabric choices when cutting.

Time for something new now!

From background fabric, cut (112) 2” x 3 ½” rectangles.

From coloured fabric, cut (224) 2” squares.

Piece the two inch squares together to make 112 units measuring 2” x 3 ½” and press.

Piece this unit to the background rectangle cut previously.

Press. This unit should now measure 3 ½” square. Continue with this method until you have made 112 of them. Put into a ziplock bag and mark with Unit Four.

Hi everyone,

Sorry that this update is a little late – life with a young family tends to throw little curveballs at your routines quite often.

There are two steps to this month – firstly, we will be using this month to catch up on any steps that you may be a little behind in, and secondly we will be adding our first border.

So – to recap our months so far.

Month One – we should have a strip measuring 9.5” x 42.5”

After all your blocks are finished and in rows measuring the above, stitch together as shown below.  It’s up to you where you place the rows, however feel free to copy my layout if you wish.

 

When all stitched together, your quilt top should measure 57.5” x 42.5”.

I’m exceptionally pleased with myself over the last few days.  These two blocks were so far the most complicated I’d attempted.  I think it definitely pays to do some easy ones first, rather than starting at the first block in the book.  You do grow in confidence the more you do.

I’m off to do some housework now.  It’s never ending.  Maybe I’ll get some time to sew a little later in the day.

So all in all, slowly but surely, I’m getting there!  This is the quilt without the blocks I’ve done.  Long way from half way but certainly getting there!.

This time, we get to sew something a little different. We’re going to make those old favourites, the half square triangles.

From background fabrics, cut 64 four inch squares.

From coloured fabrics, cut 64 four inch squares.

As always, remember scrappy is best! Use lots of different fabric choices when cutting.

Using method listed below, make 128 half square triangle units.

1. Draw a light pencil line across the diagonal of one of your squares. Draw this line on the wrong side of your fabric.

2. Lay this square over a background square right sides together and stitch a scant ¼” from either side of the pencil line.

3. Cut the blocks apart on the pencil line and press open.

Trim them back to measure 3 ½” and then put into a ziplock bag, marked Unit Three. You should have 128 units.
