Rainbow Stars

So ladies (and gents, if there are any out there), how am I going to finish this quilt up?

It's been sitting on my design wall for months.  Months and months and months.

I can't find enough colour variations to make different stars.  I tried red, it looked awful.  I've not enough orange.  I've done green, yellow, purple, pink, blue.

I guess I could make more of the same, but that makes ten blocks and I'm trying to make an even number of colour combos.

You know when you start something and you just think 'I'll just let the quilt go where it wants to?'.  Well, this is one quilt that has lost its way.

Could I make a rainbow effect?  Maybe.  Maybe I'll go play with EQ7 for a bit and see what jumps out at me.

Answers on a postcard, please!

  1. YOu could do more blocks in the same colours, but a lighter or darker shade of each, or try apricot, tans, rose pink, or lilac shades. I am sure you will work it out on EQ, which is an amazing programme. Are you competent with it, or do you need a class to learn more with Judy B??

    1. Hi Jude,

I'm certainly NOT proficient with EQ, though I'm getting better. I wish I had more time to try out some classes, there aren't enough hours in my day to do all I want to do. I'm thinking that I will make at least nine blocks in total, maybe doubling up on some colours. I've kept all the half square triangles from the flying geese so I'm planning on using them too somewhere, though exactly where I don't know.

But I'll get there. Thanks so much for replying!

  2. What size quilt are you going for? You could turn the blocks on point and use the setting triangles around your blocks. If you want to use the orange could you do sashing with your background fabric and use the orange as your corner stones?

Your blocks look lovely and I look forward to seeing the finished piece.

    1. Hi Sherry,

Thanks so much for your comments, I hadn't thought of on point. That certainly gives me some ideas!

I love the orange, and I think I will do an orange star, but of course it means I have to buy new fabric. What a shame!

  3. What if you used other colors--brown, grey or black? How large are the existing blocks? How large of a quilt are you trying for? What if there were alternating blocks of a different design? I know that is a lot of questions, but it is what came to mind....

    1. Hi Deanna,

Thanks for replying - I was aiming for pastels, so I don't think I want greyish or brownish tones in it.

I hadn't thought of alternative blocks, that's a good idea too. I think my problem is I have a quilt in my head, then the fabric lets me down a little (as in I don't have the colours that I want to use).

All these suggestions are very helpful, I really appreciate it.
