Two down....

Two hexes down and who knows how many to go, but they do look very sweet together, don't you think?

Something new, a giveaway and show and tell all rolled into one….

I’ve finished something!

IMG_0977

I’ve seen this design on the web a few years ago and couldn’t find a tutorial or pattern for it anywhere, so I thought ‘It can’t be that hard, I’ll make my own!’

IMG_0980

And so I have whizzed up this very cute pincushion/sewing caddy over a few hours.  Sometimes things just work easily.  Today was one of those days.

I tried hard to find a bright, sunlit place to take my photos and I think it was a little tooooo bright, so the colours are a little washed out.

And my next version won’t have four straps – it doesn’t need four straps.  But you live and learn.

It has lots of spots for pins and scissors and other quilty stuff, and a lovely little pincushion attached in the centre so you don’t lose it down the side of your chair.

It turned out so well I thought I might use this as my giveaway for the Grow Your Blog party thingie that I promised all those weeks ago.

So if you would like this, please make sure to leave a comment here:

http://sillygoosequilts.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/grow-your-blog-january-25th.html

and I’ll give it till this time tomorrow and then make a draw!

I will also throw in a pattern or two (don’t know of what yet, I have to have a look first!) but I will promise they will be quilty and/or stitchery.

So off you go, and enter if you haven’t.  And good luck!

One small hexie.....

One small, sad little hexie is all I've managed to sew today.

But it is a pretty hexie, don't you think?

A new tutorial…but not from me

I’ve had no time to sew today, but I’ve now got the cleanest floors!  Sometimes, as much as we want to do the fun stuff, the boring but necessary housework stuff gets in the way.

I thought in lieu of quilt eye candy of my own to show you, as it has been sadly lacking in that department lately, I’d show you some of the websites I’ve found interesting lately.

Whilst there are so many tutorials out there made by English speaking designers, there are some beautiful, amazing ones by Non-English designers also.  Most of them are fairly self explanatory, and I find I don’t need the words as long as I have clear enough pictures.  Here are some fabulous ones I’ve found via pinterest lately.

https://www.pattydoo.de/blog/category/english/

This website has many, many tutorials on there, but most are not in English.  However she has translated two for us on there, and the links are below.

Aren’t they the cutest little purses?  I must make the top one immediately.

The Russian ladies are so clever also – there are so many Russian blogs out there and many have tutorials.  Most of them you can just click on Google Translate (as most of them have a translate button somewhere on the website).

I had a lovely look at http://vechernie-posidelki.blogspot.com.au/

This is a nifty little messenger bag tutorial:

And a very lovely purse:

And also at that website there is a very good tutorial for this divine Christmas decoration.  There is definitely one of these in my future, I can tell you!

How pretty is that?

That will do for today, I think.

I’m about to head into my sewing room and find a prize I think worthy for my first ever giveaway in honour of all my new readers (thank you so much!).  Stay tuned and I’ll pop back on to show you what you could win!

Show and Tell

This is a real oldie but goodie.

IMG_4245

It’s still a flimsy but I think it shows up beautifully.  It was a swap I did on the internet not long after we first got our internet connection and I was opened up to the world of internet swapping.

IMG_4246

I swapped everything with everyone.  God only knows how much it cost but I got into the swapping business with much gusto.

The final result of one of my quilts is above.  I’m very pleased with how it turned out, though I don’t remember how we swapped our fabrics because I do remember making most of the blocks.  I don’t even know which block we used.

But I like the end result.  Do you?

Hope your day was filled with quilty things.  The person in charge of the weather is playing silly buggars now – tomorrow will be 44 (that’s 111 in Fahrenheit, apparently).  I foresee a day inside, under the airconditioner, or outside, in the pool.  Not much more than that!

Not that you’d notice up there, with all the great swathes of ‘yet to be done’ spaces, but I’ve made another Dear Jane block.

FullSizeRender (3)

This one is A12 Framed Fancy.  I have one more to do on this row and then I can say I have finished One. Whole. Row.

I’m having a massive ‘Why did I start this stupid quilt, I am the world’s worst quilter’ moment right now.  I can tell you that the best way to make yourself feel completely inadequate as a quilter is to search other Dear Jane blogs to see their tutorials.  There are some quilters who are just immaculate.  I don’t know how they get their work so even.  It beggars belief how good some people are.  I foundation pieced the block above which should make everything straight and lovely, and even this block is wonky in parts.  I wonder if it’s my pressing that’s letting me down?  Maybe I don’t pay enough attention to grain line?

Not asking for help here, really – just thinking out loud.

I was telling someone that I’d only done about a dozen blocks, but I didn’t really know how many I had finished, so I got them out of banishment and counted them.  I’ve now done over forty which I must admit surprised me a great deal.  So I’ve made one more today, and perhaps I can get back on some sort of schedule with this.

We shall see.

It’s another stinker of a day today and we’ve all acted like very precious snowflakes, sitting inside all day under the airconditioner.  I hope you are all coping in the North with your very cold weather, I must admit to being slightly envious of you all.

Happy quilting!
